Xiaomi signs patent deal with Nokia for long term business collaboration

Perhaps this going to be a good new for both Nokia & Xiaomi. According to rumors from leakster @Reviewer_ 小康, Nokia recently in talks with Xiaomi requiring the latter’s Surge S1 SoC to be used in the upcoming mid-range devices for Nokia smartphones.

The Finnish company decided to use the Surge S1 SoC in its upcoming mid-range Nokia phones. The Surge S1 SoC is the first ever in house chipset produced by Xiaomi. The processor  come with an 8 core which a set of 4 ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and a set of 4 power-efficient ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz, while pack with ARM Mali-T860 GPU. Referring to the benchmarks score, the Surge S1 Soc capable perform better than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC.

 

UPDATE : To consolidate early rumor of Nokia & Xiaomi, today Nokia has announced a wide-ranging patent licensing and purchase deal with Xiaomi. The deal covers three section:

  • First Nokia and xiaomi inked across licensing deal covering cellular standard essential patents.
  • Secondly Xiaomi had acquired unspecified patents from nokia.
  • Thirdly Nokia will provide network equipment to Xiaomi and will collaborate on building IP transport solutions.

Both Nokia & Xiaomi resist to provide detail on which patents Xiaomi had acquired or any financial terms of the deal.

We pretty sure both party are going to benefit from the deal. As we know Nokia is among the new comer to Android system, while Xiaomi is one of the leading smartphone using Android system. Further more licensing and pattern right are always a key improvement for Xiaomi for worldwide market. Hence with the deal being signed, we shall wait and see the upcoming development of both company. We believe more detail will be announce in short future.
