VPN is illegal in China!?

It’s no secret that China exercises an immense amount control over Internet access in China. Since 1997, China blocked access to many foreign websites including Google, Facebook and Twitter.

Virtual Private Network will be a way to allow them to bypass the “Great Firewall” and tunnel the Internet through another computer. However, China has made VPNs illegal and the penalty could go up to CNY 15,000.

The municipal government public information network issued a revised “Chongqing city public security organs of the network supervision of administrative penalty discretion benchmark” on March 27.

Although the benchmark currently only implemented in Chongqing, other cities will not be affected. However, Chongqing is one of the most important and advanced cities in China, the benchmark might be extended to more cities in China.
