Huawei defeats Samsung in patent battle in China

China’s Quanzhou City, Fujian Province Intermediate People’s Court recently ruled on Samsung’s infringement of Huawei patents, and awarded compensation of 80 million yuan (about RM51.4 million) to Huawei.

Huawei filed lawsuits against Samsung last June in view of the Samsung Galaxy series S7, S7 edge, and J5. After tracing, Huawei found Samsung has 20 kinds of products suspected of infringement, including mobile phones, tablet PCs and user interfaces (UI) such as widget pattern and how icons are arranged.

Huawei said that Huizhou Samsung and Tianjin Samsung gained profits through mass production of allegedly infringing products without permission according to the third quarter of 2014 to the third quarter of 2016.

The court also instructed Samsung to stop the infringement of Huawei’s patent and additionally compensate Huawei 500,000 yuan (about RM320,000) on court costs immediately.
